A) EXPERIENCE IN THE UNDERGRADUATE

I graduated from Hacettepe University in Ankara, in Turkey. Hacettepe University is one of the best universities of TURKEY. It is especially well-known as a center for education and research with very rich experimental facilities. As having cited papers, this university becomes the first one in Turkey.

In Hacettepe University I graduated from Physical Engineering Deaprtment. Our department, in general, is specialized in studying material sciences and crystal growth by different methods like ESR, UV, infrared, x-ray etc. My teachers in Hacettepe University, e.g. Prof.M.Korkmaz, Prof.O.Otku, Prof.M.Cankurtaran, etc, have been among the best experimentalists in Turkey. Prof. Dr. Bekir AKTAS also have come from this university. So these lecturers give lectures related to their topics. We have taken some lectures from these persons in the undergraduate. Some of them are; materials, technical drawing, Structures and properties of matters 1, Structures and properties of matters 2, Condensed Matter 1, Condensed Matter 2, Energy, X-ray diffraction, Biophysics etc. And also they had given us electronics and digital electronis lectures, numerical methods lectures by using C, Qbasics, Fortran 77 for the solutions of the physical problems etc. And there were very good student laboratories taken by us in the university. Due to this education I have started liking the experimental methods. Sometimes we visited our teachers in their laboratories to learn more about the experimental procedures.

There is a crystal growth laboratory in Hacettepe university, from where we getting samples for analyzing in the Laboratory of Prof. AKTAS in Gebze Hi-Tech Institute. Due to this I have been motivated to know more about different methods of crystal growth.

B) IN THE FATIH UNIVERSTY AND GEBZE HIGH TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE

Fatih University is one of the private universities of Turkey, founded in 1996. I jointed this university in 1997 as a research assistant.

Fatih University had bought approximately 80 experiments for the undergraduate and graduate education from a German company. However the company brought the experimental equipments and did not give any help more: they gave the experiment manual only. After that we had to share 80 experiments among the assistants and started to set up the experiments and write the experiments manual for the students. After some time we have changed our experiment with the others and improve ourselves up to now. Since 1997 we have given these laboratory lectures to the different student groups in Fatih University. The list of the experiments is given below.

During my master and PhD studying, I have been working on ferromagnetic properties of Colossal-magneto-resistive and metal-oxide systems under the supervising of Prof.Dr. Bekir AKTAS. Studying of Colossal-magneto-resistive systems and others like Fe 3O 4 was very nice but I wanted to know more about the properties of these materials and I wanted to study the growth of these materials: due to this motivation I have started to read books and papers about different methods of crystal and film growth. I have learned something about “bulk crystal growth, epitaxial crystal growth (MBE, MOCVD), strained hetero-epitaxy, lithography, photoresist coating, etching, epitaxial regrowth, etc”. In future I would like to work in this field as well.

C) IN THE University of Alabama

I attended the post doctorate program in the MINT Center of the University of Alabama in January of 2004. I started to work with Prof.Dr.Arunava Gupta on the CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and PLD (Pulsed Laser Deposition) systems. We settled the CVD and PLD systems in the laboratories.

In the CVD systems, we have grown the semiconductor nanowires. Before the growing of the nanowires in the CVD system, the substrates were coated by gold by using the thermal evaporation system. Due to that first of all, the calibration of the evaporation system was done by considering the gold material. We need gold materil in the growth as catalyst. Depending on the necessity, some samples were put in the optical lithograpy unit to make pattern before the thermal evaporation of the gold. Then substrates were put inside the quartz tube of the CVD sytem and the growth was started under the vacuum and the nitrogen gas. To check whether we grow nanowires or not, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used. The analysis of the nanowires continues.

For the PLD system, the necessary drawings were made and the fixing of the system started. Before using our pld system, I followed the education given in the another pld laboratory of the University of Alabama. After finishing the settling, we plan to grow some multilayer metal oxides.

During the post doctorate studies in the MINT Center, the following systems were used :

  • Alternating Gradient Magnetometer (AGM)
  • Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM)
  • X-Ray diffractometer
  • Dektak thickness measurement system
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
  • Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)
  • Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) system
  • Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) system
  • Thermal Evaporation System
  • Optical Microscopy in the clean room
  • Sputtering system
  • To produce some parts, I worked with the technicians in the Physiscs and Engineering machine shops.
  • For CVD and PLD systems, I made contacts with companies for some chemicals and some necessary parts in the system
  • SQUID

D) IN THE ALABAMA AGRICULTURAL AND MECHANICAL UNIVERSITY

I  attended post doctorate program of the Physics Department of the Alabama A.&M. University on July 1, 2005. I started to work with Prof. Dr. Daryush ILA in the Center for Irradiation of Materials. I started to work on the two projects. One of them is thermoelectric nano-layers and another is the nano-wires and nano-tubes. In the thermoelectric project, we started to make thermoelectric nano-layers  using the Ion Assisted Beam Deposition Technique (IBAD). After fabrication of the nano-layers, we have to analyze this material for getting good products for high sensitive thermoelectric power generator. The efficiency of the thermoelectric power generator depends on the Figure of merit consisting of  electric conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity and temperature. To analyze these materials there are many facilities in the Center for Irradiation of Materilas (CIM). In this manner we use the following instrument sets:

  • Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD) System
  • Seebeck Effect Measurement System
  • Hall Effect Measurement System and Electric Conductivity System (Van Der Pauw method)
  • Thermal Conductivity Measurement System (3w Technique)
  • Optical properties measurements systems (Raman. FTIR, etc)
  • High Energy  Accelerator (For bombardment of the samples with ions and as RBS (Rutherford Back Scattering))
  • Diamond Cutter (To cut our substrates in the suitable size)
  • Thermal Evaporator (To coat the substrates with any metal like gold, tungsten etc.)

For the nanotechnology studies, we ordered everything for the Chemical Vapour Deposition Systems (CVD). I established two CVD systems for nanowires, nanotubes and semiconductor films. These systems are ready to use.
